  • Intended for
    The Level 2( Introductory) 4-days course is designed for delegates “working in roles which may directly contribute to the creation, detection or control of a well influx”. This course is also designed to give potential well control certification candidates an awareness on well control theory, practices & equipment as a preparation prior to levels 3 & 4.

    The aim of this course is to provide a basic understanding of features of drilling a well and the fundamental principles involved in maintaining well control.

    The course is delivered through interactive lectures, presentations, classroom study book, handouts, assignments, exercises etc. There will be two written exams. Equipment and Principles & Procedures. Successful completion of the course and examination will result in IWCF Level 2 certification with 5 years validity.

    Day 1  

    Hydrostatic pressure & formation pressure. Primary well control – overbalance & under balance Porosity & permeability ,Top hole Secondary well control, Circulating pressures, APL & ECD, Change in mud weight & pump speed. Slow circulating rates .Causes of kicks. Kick warning signs, Kick indicators, Shut in procedures, Interpretation of shut in data. Starting and stopping a kill operation. Driller’s method of well control (surface stack) Gas behavior during a kill operation. Wait & weight method of well control (surface stack). Differences between kill methods. Kill Sheet & Oil Field Calculations. The Driller’s Method of well kill operations. The Wait and Weight Method of well kill operations.  Well Control during Casing & Cementing. Factors affecting Swabbing & Surging. Cementing Casing & Liner. Shut in procedures when running Casing Well Control Management  Well Control Drills

     

    Day 2

     

    Review homework. Formation strength. Influx types Oil based v water based mud’s and influx

    Gas migration – well shut in. Tripping volume calculations Warning signs, indicators and shut in

    Gas migration – open well Principles of stripping Slugs. Volumetric method of well control. Wet & dry tripping calculations BOP function, configuration and the well control operations that can be carried out. The overall pressure rating requirements of a BOP stack. Ram Type Preventers. Blind / Shear Ram Preventers, Annular Preventers, Diverters ,Associated Well Control Equipment’s, Inside BOP & Drill Pipe Safety Valves, Choke Manifolds & Chokes, Manual & Remote Choke, Auxiliary Equipments MGS, Vacuum degasser

     

    Day 3  

    Review homework. Well control management Barriers. Well Control Equipment , Give an overview of horizontal well control Analyze horizontal versus vertical – swabbing and actions to take, shut in pressures . Discuss gas behavior in horizontal wells Inflow Test. BOP Control Systems. Wireline & Casing Operation Overviews.

     

    Day 4  

    General review and clear up outstanding issues along with Revision. IWCF Equipment Exam, IWCF Principle & Procedure Exam
